The International Commission on Glass (ICG), the Community of Glass Associations (CGA) and ICOM-Glass worked long and hard to have the United Nations declare 2022 the International Year of Glass (IYoG2022). This was an exceptional achievement; it is the first time the UN has acknowledged a medium in the naming one of it’s commemorative years.

Region 16
An RO16 Artistic Glass Working Group was part of the international structure that underpined the roll-out and co-ordination of IYoG2022 in our part of the world; which included Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and all Oceania countries. Some detail of how it worked is found in this document.

.. was a member of the region’s Artistic Glass Working Group and is designing a year-long program of events to celebrate the year. A range of activities spanned the interests of all those for whom contemporary art glass is a fascination and helped bridge the boundaries that sometimes separate us.
“IYoG2022 celebrated the essential role glass has had and will continue to have in the world. It highlighted the historical, present and future technological, scientific, artistic and economic importance of this often unseen, transparent and enabling material, and its potential to facilitate the growth of just and sustainable communities across the globe.”
What happened for ausglass
A group of enthusiastic Ausglass members worked on initiatives for the year. Effort focused on the ‘Futures Past’ conference held February, 2023. This had originally been scheduled to fall within the IYoG2022 but planning was frustrated by COVID-19 limitations.
Being involved
The RO16 Artistic Glass Working Group met regularly, by Zoom, to talk about ideas, plans and possible linkages between activities to be held in the region during IYoG2022.
