Member Profile profile for Jeffrey Hamilton
My primary artistic pursuit is stained glass, mainly commissioned work for either residential or ecclesiastic spaces. Commissioned works are a response to a brief, with a client, a budget and a building; they push you in new directions. I get great satisfaction producing artworks that function as an architectural component, modulating the ambience of an interior and providing a building with soul. It’s as much about the quality of light penetrating a building, and the vision of the outside, as it is about the graphic design of the work. However I have always maintained an exhibiting profile, producing stained glass artworks that are independent of a building, and more recently three-dimensional painted & fired, blown vessels. But apart from my professional glass practice I relish the sheer joy of drawing; the interaction of various media on paper, especially heavy gauge watercolour paper. The expressive tonal and textural variety possible with charcoal, graphite and pastel appeals enormously.
