Member Profile profile for Cherie Platen
My inspiration is through my travels, where I seek out the craftsmen and artists in the “works of old glass masters”. More and more I am drawn to the fine and fragile work found in the Glass Museums of Italy, Germany and Russia and the techniques employed to achieve these intensely beautiful gifts presented to the world through centuries past.
I retired from the creative Events Industry and with my retirement came freedom, and with freedom the wonderful joy of choosing ….. Now I had the time, and for me this was to follow my fascination in life with glass and what a meditative and seductive medium it has turned out to be. My journey began with an introduction to Kilnforming at a local art studio. In 2016 I was fortunate to spend time with renowned Peter Minson, who introduced me to the world of Flamework. I returned home to Lake Macquarie in NSW and set up my work area. In 2018 I was awarded the Glassmakers Medallion in Excellence at the Royal Easter Show, Selected and Exhibited at the Totem Arts Sculpture Trail, Newport, NSW. Also in 2018, I travelled to Lauscha (Germany) and Murano in Venice (Italy). It was here in Murano that I extended my Flameworking technique under the tuition of Glass Master Elena Rosso. 2019 First at Royal Easter Show Flamework and Kiln Fired Glass. I now have a small Glass Studio on the shores of Lake Macquarie where people can view my work. My works have been selected and are available at Finite Fine Art Gallery, Caves Beach, NSW.
